Recognise Your Spiritual Impulse And Hear Its Message

Jan 22, 2018

I love to travel and explore new places around the world. There’s the initial excitement of deciding where to go, followed by a slow build-up of anticipation as I plan for the trip, often with challenges and hiccups at the last minute. Then I’m off and on my way, looking forward to new experiences with a mixture of trepidation and pleasure. Even after many years, I still enjoy the exhilaration of starting something new, never quite knowing what will happen en route.

But isn’t our whole life an adventure? A voyage into the unknown? Until we see our life as a journey of discovery there’s the danger that we may simply take it all for granted, wasting our life away, or even worse, feel that we are out of control, wallowing in self-pity or giving up on any hope of success.

Some people believe that everything is pre-destined, that each life ‘is what it is’ and cannot be changed. I have to say that I find the idea rather limiting. There may, indeed, be a divine purpose allocated to each of us, and some are, perhaps, destined to reach greater heights than others. But one thing is for sure - there are many routes to the top of the mountain! Without a sense of adventure there can be little passion for living or the desire to achieve more. Every human soul needs a path to follow.

I believe that each and every one of us has a purpose here on Earth. It may be a vocation, a service to the community, a calling to teach, or some other practical application of your life values, or it may simply be a regular offering of communion, meditation and love that you radiate outwards as part of being the person you are. Maybe you know your soul purpose, but if not, how do you begin to discover the reason you are here, and make the changes required to move forward on what may be a new life path?

The first stage of any journey is knowing where you are starting from and choosing your direction. We cannot set off without knowing where we are now, how we got here, where we are going next and the best way to get there. Wouldn’t you agree?  It’s true that you may not know your final destination but as one of the most influential psychologists in American history, Carl Rogers, once stated, “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination.”

In your spiritual life it’s exactly the same. You need to establish where you are and how you arrived at this point, whilst taking comfort from the fact that wherever you are now is exactly where you are meant to be. Whether you understand the process yet doesn’t really matter. The point is that you have chosen to move from this place. You have made the decision to take a journey. You are here, right now, in whatever circumstances. And since you are reading this blog it is likely that you don’t actually believe in coincidence and you know in your heart that you are being guided to make changes of one kind or another. You have already recognised that you have a spiritual ‘impulse’, an inner ‘knowing’ that there is more to life and that divine forces are ready to guide you. That's the first step on this new stage of your journey.

Are you ready to take the next one?
